Should we use a travel agent?
We are planning a trip to Alaska. Not going on a cruise. Flying to Anchorage and renting a car. Do we need to go through a travel agent to get the best prices for airfare? If not, how would I get the best price? We are going in late August to the beginning of Sept. Thanks.

For this itinerary is best to do it on your own (if you're in the US). Travel agents seldom get good deals for domestic routes. I would give Kayak.com a go.

Here is a link to a great web site. They give you two, three or four options for best airfares, depending on where you are going and what's available at the time. I've used them four or five times and invariably they beat dealing with the airlines directly. Just be careful as to the conditions. It's always advisable to get insurance just in case you have to cancel for medical reasons, particularly if you have family that may be ill (older parents) because if something happens to them and you cannot go you will be insured. If it's not an issue and you know that you will be going no matter what then never mind the insurance. http://www.travelzoo.com/?site=us

I try to stay away from travel agents because I think that booking a flight in the comfort of your own home is the best. My favorite travel site is www.sidestep.com

i not used a travel agent in yrs , i been mexico , india, portugal spain , to name a few i always found that if you dont mind booking up late , or even better very late , week before you fly you get very good deals , example normal flight to mexico from uk around 500 £ , i got mine for 215£ , i have used cheapestflight.co.uk , or com , and lastminute.com both sites can get you rooms as well if you want that , but i have found that "finding a room " can be a wonderful experience , and there some lil gems at real good prices if you just turn up i did see some one recommend kayak , not bad , but in my experience a lil pricey
