in my experience, i was a guide in alaska for a couple of seasons. that the busy travel seasons up there coincide with fishing and hunting, the main reason people travel there. so it is busiest from late spring until november. ish... also that keeps it from being to awfully cold which keeps alot of tourists away.

Whats the cheapest time of the year to travel to alaska?
What is the best and cheapest time of the year to travel to Anchorage, Alaska from Seattle? Any particular airlines cheaper than the rest?

April or Sep is cheapest, but the Best is July, Aug, nothing to see from Nov to March Alaska is not cheap, most time round trip for $440 from Seattle, expect more this year Take Cruise from Vancouver ,BC is an alternative way.
2 :
It's real cheap in January
3 :
Winter
4 :
I don't think you're going to get "best" and "cheapest" at the same time. The cheapest would be the dead of winter, when it's dark for most of the day. The best would be in mid-summer, but that's when everyone wants to go, so it's going to be more expensive. You can compare air fares at any of the "usual" travel websites, e.g. Kayak, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc., but they don't all list all the airlines.
5 :
When the price is cheap, then the time is bad! :) But still, i 'd rather choose cheap price than the good time. You just have to have an special eye to discover the beauties anytime.
6 :
Cheapest and best time to travel is August. This is really good time for travel.

Best travel route from Kansas City to Anchorage Alaska?
Should I fly North and then rent a car for the rest of the way? Mapquest says its a 70 hour trip by car, not really good. Has anyone made this trip? Suggestions welcome.

To fly roundtrip costs $600-800 and takes 8-11 hours depending on your preference. To drive 7025 miles takes 117 hours (15 days) and costs $3512 if you use the standard mileage rate or a bare minimum of $927 for just gas at $3.30 a gallon plus the cost of a motel if you stay in one. I can not imagine someone choosing to drive considering these factors.
2 :
It is more cost effective to fly vs drive. But, if you drive, you have 2 options. You can drive to Anchorage all the way. Another option is taking the Alaska Marine Highway. You can catch the ferry in Bellingham, Washington and take it up the inside passage (pretty much the same route as the cruise ships) to Haines, and then drive the rest of the way. Another option is they're now setting it up where you catch the ferry in Ketchikan (my hometown) or Juneau (i think) and then taking you up almost all the way to Anchorage. You'll end up getting in port about a 3 hour drive from Anchorage. It's a way to learn a lot about Alaskans, and the crazy bunch we are, plus relax and see some of the flora and fauna. It depends on if the financial aspect is the main focus, or the experience along the way is. Good luck!!!!!! And here is the link to the ferry. http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.html

Depending on the season, the time allotted for the trip, and your finances, I would say a motorcycle. I've never made it as far as Alaska, but I've put a tens of thousands of miles on my Harley-Davidson FXB travelling coast to coast. Would'nt recommend a winter trip though lol BTW, I'm from the Boston area but haven't taken my bike out of the country in years. Check the Canadian Immigration sites to see what you will need. Then make sure you pass through Banff, Alberta !!! It is BREATHTAKING !

Travel by bus from Anchorage, AK to Seattle, WA?
Hi, I've got next question about travelling in Alaska. Is it possible to go by bus from Anchorage, through Canada, to Seattle, WA? I understand, that it may take some time, but form bus I'll see more than from plane. I think that it might be cheaper than flinght and much more exciting. Thanks for all your answers, Szymon Nowacky

Greyhound bus, San Francisco to Seattle $90, Seattle to Vancouver $28, Vancouver to Whitehorse $270, Then Alaska direct busline Whitehouse to Anchorage $230. It take 5 to 6 days to arrive there, it will extremly exhausting. Whitehouse to anchorage line only operates Wed and Sun. So the better and fast way is fly, I got there from SF to ANC for $422 round trip last week. I enjoy AK, glacier and wild animals. It is not that cold now, but many tourist sites is still close. Alaska is pretty expensive. The hotel I stayed was $69 now, will be $129 next month, and $199 June to Aug.

What about renting a car and driving the Alcan on your own? That way you can take things at your own pace and stop for things that interest you. Many car rental places will let you do this. Just an idea. A friend of mine and I did this once, and it was a great time.

What is a good route to travel for a 9 day Alaska vacation starting/ending in Anchorage?
We want to go on a 9 day driving honeymoon vacation to Alaska in August. Mainly in the Kenai peninsula area, but also want to go to Denali too. Any hotel suggestions for Seward, Anchorage, Denali, Kenai, etc? Also good touristy spots to stop in these areas. Thanks!!

Good for you. Have a great time. The first big trip I took with my (now) wife was to AK for 10 days. Now we live here, so be careful what you wish for. . . In Anchorage, friends get rooms at the Millenium but bidding $50, 2-1/2 star on priceline.com. But that is off-season and August AIN'T off-season. But maybe bid $100. Millenium is really new and closest to the airport. I prefer the Voyager because it is right downtown (easy walk to 5th avenue, museum of art and history, all the gift shops, salmon bakes, etc). Probably about $169 in August. They're smaller and more helpful than the highrises like the Sheraton or the Captain Cook. And they have in-room kitchenettes so you can save on food costs. Or make popcorn or an omelette in your room if you get all wrapped in doing, you know, honeymoon stuff. For Seward, Kenai, Homer, you need a car. But for Denali, you could take the train. Goes right from Anchorage to the hotel at the NP. The views are better because you're 15 feet off the ground instead of 4 and you don't have to watch the road. You can't use a car on the Denali Park Road anyway (past the first 14 miles), you need to make reservations for the park bus. So it is an ideal time to skip having a rental car. I always camp in Denali, so I'm sorry I can't recommend a particular hotel. There are LOTS 1 mile outside the Park. It has gotten pretty touristy out there on the highway. I much prefer the atmosphere in the in-park lodging. For Seward, I've used B&Bs in town (1-2 miles north of downtown and the aquarium. I think it is a Best Western that had the best rates near the Ferry Dock. But I'd consider something really close to the auqarium. You MUST see the SeaLife Center and unless one of you has a really weak stomach, book a day cruise to Kenai Fjords NP ($60 = half day, $90 full day with meal). You'll see seal otters and whales and dolphins and calving glaciers. Ray's on the waterfront is good for seafood. I live in Kenai/Soldotna, but the only reason to stop here is if you want to catch a really big king salmon. And August is too late for that, we're into the sockeye run then. Each town's visitor's centers are okay and walking along the river and the beach will show you some local color in the form of the personal-use fishery. Homer is gorgeous. You can stay at the very end of the Spit at Land's End. The Spit is pretty busy/crazy in summer. The Islands and Oceans Visitor's Center and the Pratt Museum are well stopping at. Check out the artist galleries. Cafe Cups in town and The Homestead out Eastend Road are the best restaurants in town. Google "Russian River Falls" in Cooper Landing. It is on the way towards Kenai/Soldotna from Anchorage or from Seward. An easy 2 mile hike gets you up above an active sockeye salmon run up a rugged cascade. Real Nat'l Geo kind of shots of salmon trying really hard to get upriver. Lots of other great (but tougher) hikes out of Copper Landing to the north or south. Editted to add: I saw you posted something about Boundary Waters. The OTHER, wilderness non-motorized, canoeing area in the Country is the Kenai Canoe Trails. Search Kenai Canoe Trails Daniel Quick on amazon - it is THE guidebook for the trails. You can spend a day or two weeks paddling around out there. There are rental places on the Sterling highway, in Sterling, near the turn-off for the canoe trails. But it can be tough to find a rental with a good, balanced portage yoke. Typical lakes are 1 mile across separated by 1/4 mile of portage or 100 yards of tight water passage. Once you get 2-3 lakes out, you only see one other party a day. So as to avoid bringing all the overnight camping gear, I'd lean toward an early-start day-long trip. Oh, and this may be obvious, but LAYERS! Goretex shell (top and bottom. Polypro top and bottom and a fleece sweater. Stuff that will dry as you wear it. Rain hat plus a sun hat. Clothes for hiking in warmth and in rain. Bring dress-up clothes too, if you want (it's your honeymoon), but there's no place in the state that wouldn't seat you in Extra-tuff boots and clean Carhartts. Hope that helps.

There's no Greyhound bus service in Alaska. The Alaska state ferry system does not go directly from Seattle to Anchorage. Really, the only way to get there is via plane. The only other way is to drive.

700 dollars for a ticket. And you might want to bring an extra 20 bucks for snacks if you get hungry. Oh, and if you come between October and April bring a LOT of gear, hats, gloves, and a snowsuit and that'll cost 100 bucks. Hotels are expensive so it'll cost ya 60 bucks. Extra money for luggage. That's about it. Overall I'd say bring 1000-2000 maybe 2500 dollars depending on the ticket. Hope I helped!!!!!

If you are traveling in a RV, motorhome, 5th wheel or travel trailer plan on at least two days. It can be done quicker but why? Enjoy the view, stop and see the sights. In my five months in Alaska last year I never saw anyone get a ticket for speeding, but with all the signs I'm sure it happens. Watch yourself on the Turnagain Arm streach of road. If you are really in a hurry, it can be driven in eight hours. That is if you don't get behind a RV caravan or some slow moving vehicle. Rules of the road are to let people pass if you have more than four vehicles behind you. Sometimes this isn't possible due to road conditions. Stop and watch the Dall Sheep on the cliffs above Bird Point. Spend some time at Aleska, a resort near Gridwood and watch the Parasailers, ride the tram to the top and have lunch. Visit Portage Glacier Visitors Center. Take a drive through the tunnel to Whitter, you'll be driving on railroad tracks, don't take a RV as it's too expensive. Drive on to Seward and visit the Exit Glacier and the marine bird center. There are so many stops along the way you might want to take a week like I did in 2006. Other good stops along the way are: Cooper Landing, Sterling, Ninilchik, Happy Valley and Soldotna. Enjoy yourself and drive safe.

About What is the best way to travel between Juneau and Anchorage

What is the best way to travel between Juneau and Anchorage?
I am planning on moving to Alaska for the fishing, hunting, and outdoor opportunities. I was originally considering the anchorage area for it's central location, surrounding mountains, ease of access by vehicle, and proximity to a larger city. I found a job opening in Juneau so was wondering if that would put me too far out of the way from the opportunities that exist in south-central Alaska. Is constant travel to that area from Juneau going to be very difficult?

Are you aware that the only ways in and out of Juneau are by air or water? There are not any roads to and from! If money and time are no object then you will be ok. Recreational opportunities also exist for you to enjoy in the Juneau area. Alaska is a huge state with many wonders. Welcome to our Alaska!

What is the best way to travel from Seattle to Anchorage and back if not flying? Ferries?
I'm looking for alternative means to travel from Seattle to Anchorage. Are there passenger boats/ferries? How expensive are they? How long do they take?

There are passenger ferries and they are relatively inexpensive. Rates would vary depending on if you would like a cabin, where you would be getting on/off, size of vehicle, etc. But the view...AMAZING!! Same passage as a cruise ship at a fraction of the cost. Enjoy your trip!
2 :
Alaska ferry system info at the link below. I've taken this trip, it's wonderful. As good a cruise, for less than a 1/4 of the money. Takes 4 days to get to Skagway, at least it did when I took the trip.
3 :
There aren't ferries that will bring you to Anchorage. I think it drops you off in Haines and then you have to drive.
