I am trying to decide if I should travel to Alaska via cruise or fly directly into Anchorage...?
Which would be most enjoyable?

I had a friend from Wisconsin that grew up there and we flew together so she could show me her home town(Anchorage) It was a very long flight....I suggest doing the cruise !!!! I wished we would of!!! Have fun=)

It depends on your point of view. Find out how long it would take for the cruise vs flying. Are you on vacation, if so, how long do you have. If you have two weeks vacation, subtrack how long the cruise is from your vacation. Cruise's are alot of fun, but it may cut the time you spend in Alaska.

I did this trip like 2 years ago i think.. it was really fun we flew right into Anchorage, then rented an RV and it was really fun because we could do what ever we wanted and we went to go see a lot of national parks like Denali, and Mt Mckenzie cruises are always fun too. I suggest Holland America or Princess

This one is a total no brainer for me. I have done both and the cruise was much better. I did the inside passage which included ports of call in Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Skagway, Haines, Glacier Bay (or another glacier—possibly Sawyer), and a day of cruising Misty Fjords. My next cruise will be on a smaller ship that can get into the areas that the large cruise ships can't.

Come on up! We are open 24/7. I suggest taking the cruise one year and then fly up the next year! Either way you will have an enjoyable and memorable trip. Each method will give you an adventure and the scenery will be different each time. Make happy memories!

There is nowhere quite like Alaska, and because it is so vast in expanse, you will see something different at every turn; glaciers, mountains, wild life, etc. Cruises to Alaska right now are at bargain prices, and give you many options as well. You 1) don't have to choose and 2) mostly don't get to choose. Let me explain: Most Alaskan cruises go ONE-WAY up the "Inside Passage" Ketichan-Petersburg-Juneau-Glacier Bay-Cordova-Seward/Whittier. And then you have the choice of flying back or tacking on a land-portion (Anchorage and Denali National Park and maybe Fairbanks). (Of course the ship goes back with a full load of passangers doing the reverse itinerary). You can orignate out of Seattle or Bellingham, by ship or by plane. Otherwise, there are very few origins for an Alaskan cruise. Unless you are on a "repositioning" cruise at the beginning or end of the May-August season. When the ships come from or return to Japan or Mexico, etc. I'd have a slight preference for cruising first and then doing the land portion. Only because it will go more "far north" as you go. Longer days, bigger mountains, bigger land critters, etc. But look at prices and schedules. You can do sea then land. Or land then sea. I would far prefer the combo, land/sea packages to cruising up and back. You'll see some very different things on the land portion instead of simply the other side of millions of tress and dozens of fjords on the return cruise.

in my experience, i was a guide in alaska for a couple of seasons. that the busy travel seasons up there coincide with fishing and hunting, the main reason people travel there. so it is busiest from late spring until november. ish... also that keeps it from being to awfully cold which keeps alot of tourists away.

Whats the cheapest time of the year to travel to alaska?
What is the best and cheapest time of the year to travel to Anchorage, Alaska from Seattle? Any particular airlines cheaper than the rest?

April or Sep is cheapest, but the Best is July, Aug, nothing to see from Nov to March Alaska is not cheap, most time round trip for $440 from Seattle, expect more this year Take Cruise from Vancouver ,BC is an alternative way.

I don't think you're going to get "best" and "cheapest" at the same time. The cheapest would be the dead of winter, when it's dark for most of the day. The best would be in mid-summer, but that's when everyone wants to go, so it's going to be more expensive. You can compare air fares at any of the "usual" travel websites, e.g. Kayak, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc., but they don't all list all the airlines.

When the price is cheap, then the time is bad! :) But still, i 'd rather choose cheap price than the good time. You just have to have an special eye to discover the beauties anytime.

About Best travel route from Kansas City to Anchorage Alaska
Best travel route from Kansas City to Anchorage Alaska?
Should I fly North and then rent a car for the rest of the way? Mapquest says its a 70 hour trip by car, not really good. Has anyone made this trip? Suggestions welcome.

To fly roundtrip costs $600-800 and takes 8-11 hours depending on your preference. To drive 7025 miles takes 117 hours (15 days) and costs $3512 if you use the standard mileage rate or a bare minimum of $927 for just gas at $3.30 a gallon plus the cost of a motel if you stay in one. I can not imagine someone choosing to drive considering these factors.

It is more cost effective to fly vs drive. But, if you drive, you have 2 options. You can drive to Anchorage all the way. Another option is taking the Alaska Marine Highway. You can catch the ferry in Bellingham, Washington and take it up the inside passage (pretty much the same route as the cruise ships) to Haines, and then drive the rest of the way. Another option is they're now setting it up where you catch the ferry in Ketchikan (my hometown) or Juneau (i think) and then taking you up almost all the way to Anchorage. You'll end up getting in port about a 3 hour drive from Anchorage. It's a way to learn a lot about Alaskans, and the crazy bunch we are, plus relax and see some of the flora and fauna.
