I am riding my motorcycle from Daytona to Anchorage. Any motel or restaurant suggestions?
I am in the planning stages of my trip. One thing is that I do NOT want to use chain motels or restaurants but local "mom & pop" places. If any of you have traveled the Trans Canada highway and/or gone into Alaska to Anchorage I would love to hear about locally owned restaurants and motels that are a must to stop at or a must to avoid. Please include a "why" with your answer. Thanks to y'all in advance.

I wouldn't think this time of the year would be a good idea to ride a bike to Anchorage. I've lived there and it's starting to get cold compared to the lower 48. Good luck if you're going and remember rubber side down shiny side up.

Agree with the poster above. I live in Yellowknife, weather will soon change and I already stored my bikes for the winter. You will be fine up to about Dawson Creek, but after that you may hit snow any day and the weather can become unpredictable. Lots of info on accomodation available. My family is traveling to Seward, Alaska for a cruise in May 2010. I need to rent a toddler car seat for the week. We have a 2 hour drive from Anchorage to Seward. Thank you!

Every rental car agency will offer child seats for rent. I don't rent in Alaska because I live here, but when I've done it elsewhere, car seats are about $5/day. That's really high for something with someone else's spit-up and cheerios on it, but you wouldn't have to carry something with you. If you have a beater car seat, you could check it on the airline and have it with you. Or you could bring a good one both ways with you. I don't think you pay a baggage fee for it. Certainly not if you carry it to the gate and "gate check" it. Alaska Airlines is especially nice to families and will let you "baby block" a seat when you get to the airport. That makes the seat next to you, the last one they sell. It increases your chances of having a free seat to put your child in a car seat on the plane. Which lets them sleep more easily. Which lets you sleep more easily. Alaska will also sell a seat for an <2 year old for 1/2 price and then you have a gauranteed seat for them. There is a Costco and two Wallmarts in Anchorage so if you're willing to be illegal for 6 milesfrom the airport, you could buy a basic infant seat for $25-35 and skip the rental fee. Or do that before you go and have it with you. Salvation Army and Goodwill usually won't offer carseats for liability reasons. Even in Alaska. They do resell skiis, which no one in the 48 states does, but I haven't seen carseats at the Anchorage second-hand stores. Although I've seen them (and offered them) on freecycle.com. Compared to the cost of the cruise, just spring for the rental car agency's car seat. But I've tried to lay out some other options as well.

Should we use a travel agent?
We are planning a trip to Alaska. Not going on a cruise. Flying to Anchorage and renting a car. Do we need to go through a travel agent to get the best prices for airfare? If not, how would I get the best price? We are going in late August to the beginning of Sept. Thanks.

For this itinerary is best to do it on your own (if you're in the US). Travel agents seldom get good deals for domestic routes. I would give Kayak.com a go.

Here is a link to a great web site. They give you two, three or four options for best airfares, depending on where you are going and what's available at the time. I've used them four or five times and invariably they beat dealing with the airlines directly. Just be careful as to the conditions. It's always advisable to get insurance just in case you have to cancel for medical reasons, particularly if you have family that may be ill (older parents) because if something happens to them and you cannot go you will be insured. i not used a travel agent in yrs , i been mexico , india, portugal spain , to name a few i always found that if you dont mind booking up late , or even better very late , week before you fly you get very good deals , example normal flight to mexico from uk around 500 £ , i got mine for 215£ , i have used cheapestflight.co.uk , or com , and lastminute.com both sites can get you rooms as well if you want that , but i have found that "finding a room " can be a wonderful experience , and there some lil gems at real good prices if you just turn up i did see some one recommend kayak , not bad , but in my experience a lil pricey

I rode from Haines to Fairbanks in June, not sure of the weather in April. Roads are paved all the way but you may hit construction zones where you have to drive on dirt for 10 miles or so. Get a copy of the Milepost, it details all the roads you will need, where to find services, etc. http://www.themilepost.com Also available at Amazon and other bookstores. Have a fun trip.

Travel time to Anchorage is going to be closer to 16 hours. Roads will be good, gonna have a bit of snow but not bad temps will still be below freezing in the early am, but daytime will be quite nice. Top off the tank in Haines Junction, then you should be good to Tok, AK. Plenty of fuel stops along the way. Tok, Mendelatna, Gakona, GlennAllen, Eureka, Palmer. Nothing to worry about and it is a one day drive but start early. Camai

The Iditarod actually has two starts: the ceremonial start in Anchorage, and the official start (usually) in Wasilla. Wasilla is located about 40 miles by highway north of Anchorage. The ceremonial start takes place on 4th Avenue downtown. There are several hotels downtown. The Hilton Hotel is located on 3rd Avenue, the Sheraton Hotel is located on 6th Avenue, and the Marriott Hotel is located on 7th or 8th Avenue. Additionally, there's the Captain Cook Hotel on 4th Avenue. All of these are high quality hotels. As for sightseeing, I'm not sure what you'd like to do, or if you'll have a rental car, so I would consider contacting the Anchorage Convention and Vistors Bureau. (http://www.anchorage.net) They have information for you and you can decide what you would like to do.

Root for Jeff King for me. All I can say about Anchorage this time of year is to dress warm and root for Jeff King.

The restart (the real start) of the race will be in Willow. There is shuttle service from Wasilla High, Wasilla Middle School & Houston High to the Willow starting line due to parking issues in Willow.

I would head to Eklutna,,,,It is about 15 miles north of Anchorage towards wasilla. It is an old Russian cemetery that has Spirit houses.Only about half of a mile off the interstate, Also South of Anchorage is very pretty...I would try to avoid Anchorage itself.

Well, if you are going to visit soon, it is still going to be winter conditions. A little after that, will be break up season, which I think, is the ugliest time of year to visit. No real salmon fishing this time of year to speak of. A guy mentioned before about Kenai, which is wonderful in the summer and great fishing, but is about a 4.5 hour drive without traffic and might not be the best place to visit in March/April. As far as pictures, you could always head toward Alyeska, the route is very scenic and would offer several pull offs with great photo opportunites. There are waterfalls alongside the road and a lot of the time, wildlife as well. You could also try heading North towards the Valley. I would check out Hatcher's Pass. You can drive up quite a ways and take beautiful pictures looking down at the Matanuska Valley/Rivers . Something to keep in mind, is that this is Alaska and it still gets dark a whole lost sooner than the Lower 48. You don't want to drive all the way out to these places and find that it's 4 in the afternoon and dark out. Kind of ruins the picture. Both Alyeska and the Valley are less than 150 mi. from the AFB. Alyeska is probably an hour drive outside Anch. and the Valley is a quick 45 min. to Palmer, then maybe another 30 or so to get up Hatchers. Both are well worth it! As far as Anchorage goes, I'm not a huge fan. Lived in Alaska for 26 years and never really go unless I have to. I know a lot of people enjoy going to Koot's (If you want to go out). I'm sure if you ask anyone where to go out, especially if you are not from around here, they will tell you to check out Chilkoot Charlies. It is worth checking out. Anyways, hope that this helps... If you ever get the chance to come back up, come during the summer. There is so much more to do... millions of possibilities. Good Luck and enjoy our beautiful State.

Super 8 motel in Anchorage.

Google "youth hostel anchorage" and 10 different hostels pop up. We have a different au pair living with us each year and several of them have used the youth hostels when they take a trip to Anchorage. Probably your cheapest option (other than camping) if you're a tourist here or while looking for a place to rent long-term. You don't have to be a student or a youth to stay. Just willing to share a same-sex room with 4-6 people. With showers down the hall. Hotels along Spenard (fairly close to the airport) tend to be older, cheaper, and sometimes seedier than ones downtown or mid-town. Friends have had good luck with priceline.com if they ask for about $90 rooms during the summer, $55 or so in winter. Beginning of September is very much shoulder season. Things are tapering off, but we're over the peak season of June-July-August. Willing to pay more, and I like the Voyager downtown. mini-kitchens in the rooms, with dishes, big rooms, friendly. Convenient downtown location. A lot of Alaskans use them when they have to be in Anchorage. Not cheap, but not more expensive then anyone else, either. They drop their rates a lot in winter.

Simply google "Alaska Marine Highway" and you will find the ferry schedule. You need to sign up and pay for your Cordova trip asap! That ferry is not run very often and it books up early!! The ferry does not go from Anchorage to Cordova. It leaves from Seward - about a 2 hour drive from Anchorage.

I'm flying from Phoenix to Anchorage on Friday for 2 weeks to visit my mom. I'm EXTREMELY worried about taking my Labrador, Toby. I really want him to come with me, but I am not willing to expose him to any type of danger. Has anyone had any experiences with having their pets travel in cargo? There is no reason for you to take your dog for that sort of time. You should leave him at home with a friend or in a kennel. There's no reason to take the risk.

The airlines will only allow dogs to be shipped if the temperatures are within an acceptable range. Check with the airlines for what those figures are. As for any stress, they quickly get over it unless the dog is very high anxiety to start with.

It should be fine. Airlines are used to dealing with animals. When we moved from Japan to the United States we brought our dog with us and she did just fine down in the cargo area for the 10+ hour flight. If you dog has all of it's shots he should be fine

Vist you local vet to get some stress pills. Make sure you dog is comfee and relaxed. Give your dog the stress pills and Toby should be fine. Good luck! :)

Do you mean from the city of Seward (Alaska) to Anchorage? They are not that far apart by Alaska standards, maybe 120 miles. Figure on $30 or so for a bus or up to $100 for a cab. There's good roads all the way but you never know what kind of weather you'll get this time of year. There are a couple of places between Seward and Anchorage that get blasted with snow in the winter.

Most cruises here end early September. If you're into hiking, there's a lot to see at Chugach State Park. There, you'll find Flat top which is Alaska's most visited peak. Once you get to the top, there's a view that you'll surely enjoy. (http://alaska.org/anchorage/parks-and-trails.jsp) There are museums downtown as well where you can learn about the history and wildlife. I can't really think of anything for the month of October. If you visit again, be sure to come during the summer. You can go whitewater rafting at Six Mile Creek, which is VERY adventurous and exhilarating! Say you just graduated from High School and you were planning on a vacation for about 12 - 13 days. You have a limited budget of about $2,000 to $6,000 which of these places would be the best place to travel to and why? Anchorage, Alaska Honolulu, Hawaii New York City Disney World I can't afford Europe. Please help me decide between ONLY these 4 places!! That is a huge budget, I wish I could have gotten that much money together for a senior trip. I would choose Disney World- things for everyone to do, lots of fun, probably the most inexpensive. If you have never been to NYC before, it is a great place but more expensive and hard if you don't know the city. Ancohorage sounds cool but I would think there is less to do. And Hawaii i'm sure would be great if you are looking for a beach, personally i'm not as into that. So basically it depends what you are looking for: city, beach, parks... Another fun place to consider: Montreal?

Out of those four, I would choose Honolulu. But why limit yourself? What about Calgary and the Banff National Park in Alberta? You say that you can't afford Europe but the Icelandic Krona has fallen very sharply in the last few months - it is probable that you would be able to have a cheap package to Iceland, cheaper in fact than some of the other places you suggest.

You can always fly, take a cruise, or theres an alternative. A ferry. But the ferry dosent take off from Seattle, I belive it takes off from Bellingham (north of Seattle) and arrive in Seward (south of Anchorage). http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/ and http://www.princess.com/

If you are adventurous you can travel by bus through Canada. GLI brings you to Whitehourse,YT where the conection to Alaska Direct Bus service can be made. I believe the total cost is about $125 each way. I know there are ferries that also make the trip from the terminal at Bellingham seasonally.

I had a friend from Wisconsin that grew up there and we flew together so she could show me her home town(Anchorage) It was a very long flight....I suggest doing the cruise !!!! I wished we would of!!! Have fun=)

It depends on your point of view. Find out how long it would take for the cruise vs flying. Are you on vacation, if so, how long do you have. If you have two weeks vacation, subtrack how long the cruise is from your vacation. Cruise's are alot of fun, but it may cut the time you spend in Alaska.

I did this trip like 2 years ago i think.. it was really fun we flew right into Anchorage, then rented an RV and it was really fun because we could do what ever we wanted and we went to go see a lot of national parks like Denali, and Mt Mckenzie cruises are always fun too. I suggest Holland America or Princess

This one is a total no brainer for me. I have done both and the cruise was much better. I did the inside passage which included ports of call in Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Skagway, Haines, Glacier Bay (or another glacier—possibly Sawyer), and a day of cruising Misty Fjords. My next cruise will be on a smaller ship that can get into the areas that the large cruise ships can't.

Come on up! We are open 24/7. I suggest taking the cruise one year and then fly up the next year! Either way you will have an enjoyable and memorable trip. Each method will give you an adventure and the scenery will be different each time. Make happy memories!

Well by your question..."which would be most enjoyable?"; the answer is simple... The Cruise! There is nowhere quite like Alaska, and because it is so vast in expanse, you will see something different at every turn; glaciers, mountains, wild life, etc. Cruises to Alaska right now are at bargain prices, and give you many options as well. So take the cruise and see how the land used to look. Camai! Alaska travel guru! If you need any other ideas, let me know!

You 1) don't have to choose and 2) mostly don't get to choose. Let me explain: Most Alaskan cruises go ONE-WAY up the "Inside Passage" Ketichan-Petersburg-Juneau-Glacier Bay-Cordova-Seward/Whittier. And then you have the choice of flying back or tacking on a land-portion (Anchorage and Denali National Park and maybe Fairbanks). (Of course the ship goes back with a full load of passangers doing the reverse itinerary). You can orignate out of Seattle or Bellingham, by ship or by plane. Otherwise, there are very few origins for an Alaskan cruise. Unless you are on a "repositioning" cruise at the beginning or end of the May-August season. When the ships come from or return to Japan or Mexico, etc. I'd have a slight preference for cruising first and then doing the land portion. Only because it will go more "far north" as you go. Longer days, bigger mountains, bigger land critters, etc. But look at prices and schedules. You can do sea then land. Or land then sea. I would far prefer the combo, land/sea packages to cruising up and back. You'll see some very different things on the land portion instead of simply the other side of millions of tress and dozens of fjords on the return cruise.

in my experience, i was a guide in alaska for a couple of seasons. that the busy travel seasons up there coincide with fishing and hunting, the main reason people travel there. so it is busiest from late spring until november. ish... also that keeps it from being to awfully cold which keeps alot of tourists away.

April or Sep is cheapest, but the Best is July, Aug, nothing to see from Nov to March Alaska is not cheap, most time round trip for $440 from Seattle, expect more this year Take Cruise from Vancouver ,BC is an alternative way.

I don't think you're going to get "best" and "cheapest" at the same time. The cheapest would be the dead of winter, when it's dark for most of the day. The best would be in mid-summer, but that's when everyone wants to go, so it's going to be more expensive. You can compare air fares at any of the "usual" travel websites, e.g. Kayak, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc., but they don't all list all the airlines.

When the price is cheap, then the time is bad! :) But still, i 'd rather choose cheap price than the good time. You just have to have an special eye to discover the beauties anytime.
